Case Studies:
Promoting HIV Testing

Case studies that focus on promoting HIV testing address cultural gaps in gender, age, health literacy, trust and other socio-ethnic barriers of patients. Cases also cover intra-ethnic variations among people and the need to avoid stereotyping in one's approach to care and treatment. 
   
The following are chosen from the AETC-NMC collection of case studies and focus on scenarios involving promoting HIV testing:
Case Study 8 Tala is a 26 year old Filipino woman who got tested at a community based clinic after reading about the multicultural staff in a local newspaper. She reported that her husband has been seeing commercial sex workers for several years, has been in and out of drug treatment programs, and has been physically abusive toward her while intoxicated. Carmen, a 17-year-old Latina, shows up at a clinic for a gynecological exam. Carmen has been sexually active for over a year, and because she does not use condoms consistently, she is afraid that she may have contracted HIV or another STI. Read more...

Archina, a 55-year-old East Indian woman, is brought to her OB/GYN appointment by her husband. Her native language is Hindi, but she speaks and understands English. She complains of vaginal irritation for the past three months and pain during sexual intercourse for one month. Read more...

Carlos is a 22 year old Salvadoran female to male transgender person. His parents died shortly after his birth and he was given into adoption to a well known family in San Salvador City. Carlos was sexually abused throughout his childhood by his step-father. Read more...
