Case Studies:
Asian Americans, Native Hawaiiasns, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI)

Case studies of provider to patient encounters covering cultural gaps in gender, age, health literacy, trust and other socio-ethnic barriers. Cases also cover intra-ethnic variations among AANHPI and the need to avoid stereotyping in one's approach to care and treatment. 
The following are chosen from the AETC-NMC collection of case studies and focus on scenarios involving AANHPI:

Feng is a 22 year old Chinese American male who is gay and has had multiple partners over the last several years. He recently graduated from college and has found a position as an engineer in a prestigious firm. As the only male child, his parents are very proud of his accomplishments. Read more...

Case Study 8 Tala is a 26 year old Filipino woman who got tested at a community based clinic after reading about the multicultural staff in a local newspaper. She reported that her husband has been seeing commercial sex workers for several years, has been in and out of drug treatment programs, and has been physically abusive toward her while intoxicated. Case Study 9

A middle-aged Chinese patient refused pain medication following cataract surgery. When asked, he replied his discomfort was bearable and he could survive without any medication. Later the nurse found him restless and uncomfortable. Again the nurse offered pain medication. Read more...

Case Study 10

A Vietnamese woman was rushed to the hospital by her adult children. The emergency room personnel discovered dark red welts running up her arms, shoulders and chest, yet the only presenting complaint was dizziness. When questioned, her son explained that he had rubbed her body with a quarter. Read more...

Case Study 28

Archina, a 55-year-old East Indian woman, is brought to her OB/GYN appointment by her husband. Her native language is Hindi, but she speaks and understands English. She complains of vaginal irritation for the past three months and pain during sexual intercourse for one month. Read more...

Angela is a 22 year old Chinese transgender male to female person. She seems nervous and does not make eye contact. English is not her first language. She is currently going through estrogen hormone therapy. She has a history of depression and drug use. Read more...
